Just like that, a month of travel, life lessons and unexpected adventures has been and gone. For the past couple of weeks I’ve been gallivanting around the Seychelles with my best friend Sam, where we not only worked on our tans, but also took part in a volunteer marine conservation programme with Global Vision International (GVI).
When we weren’t working up an appetite by snorkelling, swimming, hiking or cycling the streets of La Digue upon vintage bicycles, we were eating. Or wandering around the towns in search of snacks (I even came across a few designated “Snack Shops” in Mahé, which suited me and my snack-tastic life just fine because #SnacksAreLife). Or, deliberating what to order for dinner, and feeling slightly guilty over all that we’d spent on eating earlier that day. Safe to say, we sampled a fair bit of the local cuisine.
You could be forgiven for thinking that, when it comes to food, the Seychelles is all coconuts and hibiscus flowers. There’s a vendor or six selling coconut water alongside almost every stretch of beach, and it IS an essential part of the tropical island experience to buy one to sip on while gazing serenely into that blue BLUE sea.
But, when you delve a little deeper, you’ll see that a taste of the Seychelles is also papaya, bananas and star fruit, or sour mango chopped up for salsa; fish cooked whole (scales included) on the BBQ and served with rice and salad; gourmet hot dogs paired with delicate fried breadfruit chips, and pizza with prosciutto and ananas (or ham and pineapple as we know it); fresh produce markets that emit a pungent yet surprisingly enticing aroma of fresh seafood, ripening fruit, cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans; and buffet tables laden with bok choi, coconut chicken curry, spicy beef stir-fry and sliced baguette to soak up that fusion of flavours. Then, of course, there’s also the rum . In the Seychelles, the Creole food is inspired by African, French, Chinese and Indian cooking traditions, so it’s as diverse as the people that call these islands home.

This post is really only a little taste (also not sorry about all these puns) of my Seychelles experience. Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be sharing more of it with you so give my blog a follow to stay up to date (I even have some sneaky little vlogs in the works). For now, let’s just say that my time volunteering with GVI on Curieuse island was one of the most difficult, crazy and wild adventures I’ve ever embarked on, but I also had THE BEST time of my life, spent a better part of each day hanging out with all the fantastical marine things in the sea, and would be back there already if I could.
